2007 Garnett Reserves 1(0) vs. (0) 1 Blyth Thoroton
|
The Reserves bounced back from last week's Cup disappointment to record an excellent draw against League leaders Blyth. Despite a number of missing players the Reserves fielded a strong 11 and started brightly against a subdued opposition with Alcock and Kent performing admirably in the centre of the park. The green and blacks dominated the play, however failed to turn overwhelming possession into clear cut chances and indeed goals. Completely against the run of play Blyth scored, having taken advantage of an uncharacteristic defensive mistake by the home team. The Reserves started the second half in the same manner as the first with both Riley and Kilvington making useful progress down the flanks. The Reserves best chance of the game fell to Skilbeck who headed against the crossbar after a great cross from Riley, with Alcock narrowly missing the follow-up. The visitor's goalkeeper made a string of decent stops to frustrate the hosts with Blyth offering little up front against a well drilled back line of McGill, Parkinson, Turner and Armstrong. Garnett were justifiably awarded a penalty in the final minute and inspite of some excessant complaining from the visitors, Skilbeck sent the home team into ecstasy but hitting the G-spot from the penalty spot (ok the letter G on the nets). A decent point for the Reserves who, on reflection, may view this as two points dropped. Some difficult decisions next week for the Manager with a number of returning players, however the team sprit remains rightly high.
