The Student B's made a tremendous start to the season
with a convincing victory over Real Ale. With nine debutants Garnett
were full of enthusiasm from the start and with more composed finishing
would have won by more.
Real Ale took the lead against the run of play but Garnett dominated
the rest of the half with fresher Chris Pearce particularly impressive
in the centre of midfield. Liam Appleby's simple tap in was the
sole reward as Garnett turned round to face a strong wind all square.
Garnett improved against the wind as if forced them to pass the ball,
scoring four goals from fresher Luke Lavery who after a quiet
1st half on the wing revelled in the space behind the front two in the
second displaying an eye for a pass and the rare ability to shoot powerfully
with both feet. Lavery scored four times, twice with either foot, all
from distance (three top drawer and one fluke).
With Pearce switching effectively to sweeper, impressive Fresher keeper
Rory Kroon was rarely tested bar one excellent penalty save at 4-1.
But it would be unfair to single out any individual when the whole team
did well. With improved fitness and more experience Garnett can look
forward to a successful season.
