Garnett B came into this game after a couple of disappointing
draws knowing that they couldn't afford to drop any more points this
early in the season. Barnstoneworth themselves had not started the season
as well they had wanted to so the game was always going to be interesting
and keenly contested.
The game started quite brightly with both teams attempting to take a
hold on the game, Barnstoneworth were probably having more possession
but Garnett were looking more dangerous when they attacked. A few half
chances were spurned before a break down the left lead to a slight scramble
in the Barnstoneworth defence and Rutherford was on hand to break
the deadlock with his weaker right foot. This breakthrough settled the
Green and Black and they started to exert some control on the game as
Jones, McMillan and Kent all having decent efforts. Ford then released
Holme down the inside right channel where he was promptly upended in
the box for a stonewall penalty which Jones duly converted with
ease. Half time 2-0.
The half time team talk focused on how Garnett had not
been brilliant but still led and that complacency was not acceptable.
The warning was taken on board and McMillan struck to make it
3-0 with a great header from a superb Holme cross. The game could have
been done and dusted as Garnett wasted chances to kill the game off.
Barnstoneworth were then handed a lifeline as a superb finish finally
beat the ever-impressive Scott. This gave them the lift they needed
and with 15 minutes to go Barnstoneworth began to throw everything at
Garnett. The game could have been settled when three or four chances
for 4-1 were squandered.
With two minutes to go Barnstoneworth pulled another one back as a lucky
deflection in the box fell kindly for an opposition player to just about
beat Scott. This led to a grandstand finish as Scott pulled off another
fantastic save from a flick-on at a free kick harshly awarded against
the immense Powers, this save turned out to be the last touch of the
game as Garnett held their nerve to hold onto their unbeaten run for
another week.
