Saturday 12th February 2005 Chemfica B 0 (0) vs.(1)
3 Garnett B
|
Cold, wet and blustery conditions made this a difficult game to play, and not a very interesting game to watch. Despite this, Garnett should have gone ahead early in the first half, a sweeping cross from the right found Marshall unmarked but he could only side-foot the ball wide. The only real chance of the first half was eventually converted by Holme after collecting a rebound from Marshall, then hitting the ball against the cross bar and leaping like a salmon over the keeper to head home. The second half was pretty much as scrappy as the first with neither team able to find any sort of rhythm. Superb defending by Pendlebury kept Chemfica firmly under control. In the last twenty minutes Garnett started to dominate the game. Several good corners from Ford (even after having to go and get the ball himself!) should have yielded a result, the best falling to Rigby who could only place the ball wide with a free header. Jones could also have doubled our lead when a good cross from Marshall was placed “where I wanted it to go but for some reason that wasn’t where the goal was”? Marshall himself could have scored on a couple of occasions but lobed both the keeper and goal. Garnett finally gave themselves a little breathing space late on, Jones getting the ball into the back of net with a bobbling shot that went in off the post. Holme made sure with five minutes left after the Chemfica defender decided to stand on the line with the ball and Holme slid in taking both into the goal. Solid defending by man of the match Pendlebury, as well as good work by both Marshall and Cook kept this match from losing all control. A good result, but not up to Garnett B’s usual standards, who will have to be on top form for next weeks’ top of the table clash with JCB Eindhoven.
