A below par Garnett were lucky that their
opponents lacked a cutting edge, as no doubt a half decent team would
have punished their pitiable performance.
Garnett got off to a perfect start when the Wallsend keeper gifted them an early goal by diving over Cavanagh's drive from just inside the box. The goal should have settled Garnett but the players seemed to sit back assuming the game would be comfortably won. Although Sherwood did have chances to extend the lead, Garnett were fortunate to be 1-0 up at half time as Wallsend missed an excellent opportunity when their striker pulled his effort wide when put through one-on-one against Fraser. In the second half Sherwood uncharacteristically missed a further couple of fine chances and Garnett had to wait until mid way through the half to effectively settle the tie when Hall's deflected effort beat the Wallsend keeper. Thompson added a third shortly after when he headed home the rebound from his initial effort. A few additional half chances were spurned by Garnett but the performance didn't deserve a more flattering score line. Considering the competition for places this year, such a passionless performance beggared belief. Such lethargy in the next round will most probably lead to an exit from the competition.
