GARNETT A TEAM REPORT
Saturday 23rd September 2006 Ganrett A 2(0) vs. (1) 1 Jesmond Mysterons

The A’s began their 2006/07 campaign with a hard fought win over a battling Jesmond Mysterons team at Benson park.

Preparations for the game didn’t go to plan due to a no show from the A team keeper meaning that Striker Ben Smith had to deputise between the sticks, and apart from a route one Mysterons goal midway through the first half had very little to do.

At half time it was stressed that despite trailing Garnett had been the better team and that our superior passing in the first half should have led to at least one goal.

The turning point in the game when Robins connected with both the ball and keeper from a Brennan free kick and the ball bounced tamely over the goal line. To the amazement of both sets of players the goal had been given and Garnett were back in the game. Cowles then scored his first goal of the season with a great finish to take Garnett into a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes left on the clock.

From this point on Garnett took their foot off the pedal and let Mysterons back into the game, and were lucky not to concede with Mysterons hitting the Garnett wood work several times in the dying minutes, one thanks to a great sliding clearance from Riley when the Jesmond strikers looked destined to score.

The final whistle went much to the relief of all of the Garnett players and the 3 points were secured.
