GARNETT RESERVES TEAM REPORT
Saturday 10th November 2007 Garnett Reserves 4(2) vs. (1)5 Wallsend Town Reserves

The Reserves impressive unbeaten run came to an end in the John Hampson Trophy with a narrow 4-5 defeat to a tough but good football side Wallsend Town Reserves.

A hard fought first half witnessed Wallsend take the lead after some sloppy defending from a corner, however the Reserves struck back through Hamer and Skilbeck to lead 2-1 at half time thanks to a penalty miss from the opposition.

In spite of a decent half time team talk by Glenn the Reserves started the second half sloppily and took 15-20 minutes to get going. The Reserves were made to pay when Wallsend when 2-4 ahead through a combination of good finishing and the home team’s inability to pick up midfield runners.

However the Reserves showed great character to get themselves back on level terms through Skilbeck and red hot substitute Steve Cowles (3 goals in 3 games off the bench) and were unlucky not to strike the decisive blow with a missed penalty from Tulip and a missed header from Cowles. Wallsend took the victory in the dying minutes with further surging runs from midfield to leave the Reserves dejected.

Notable performances from Turner (another solid game at Centreback) and Skilbeck (who played in spite of having a cold). Not the best Reserve Team performance in the last 2 months but decent battling against a good side and excellent team spirit to come from two goals behind.

It is important that all Reserve Team players recognise the importance of turning up the training, in particular to practice set pieces and improve our defending as a team (not just the back four). Next week provides an opportunity to make amends and commence a new sequence of wins.
