On Saturday the Manchester United and Arsenal of the
3rd division came together in what was hyped up to be a clash of titanic
proportions. The Garnett 5ths responded to this in typical style, yes,
we were 2-0 down after no more than 15 minutes. Defensive inconsistencies
coupled with forward going frustration very nearly brought an end to
the contest before half time.
An inspirational pep talk during the interval and replacements for the
injured Thorpe and out-of-sorts Keegan gave new hope to the team. Dave
(MoM) and Chris Nunn were particularly strong at the back, whilst Etan
added to his already vast number of goals to put us back into the game.
Unfortunately, when you have played football for as long as myself one
soon learns that certain events are just not possible to account for.
A wayward clearance which the referee deemed a back-pass offered Tutu
an opportunity to reassert themselves. The free kick was dispatched
in the most unprofessional of ways, during the debate between the team
and the referee, but the whistle had been blown and the goal stood.
This event would surely have broken the spirit of even the strongest
of teams, needless to say we conceded another and lost the game in style.
Manchester United or indeed Arsenal we most certainly were not!
