GARNETT A TEAM REPORT
Saturday 15th November 2003 Rutherford 1 (0) vs.(1) 1 Garnett A

Garnett A got the draw they needed to top group A of the Calvert cup against a well-organised Rutherford side.

In windy conditions Garnett started the game well with Penn, Smith, Debble, Pollard and Young all going close.
Garnett were so dominant in the first period that keeper Harty had only one save to make. However, with Garnett having the wind behind they needed to take advantage. On 30 minutes Young won a penalty when he was chopped down from behind by the Rutherford centre back. Young strode up to take the resulting penalty but hit the ball straight down the middle and the keeper saved with his legs. It was rapidly turning out to be one of those days. However, just before half time Garnett won a free kick 25 yards from goal. The excellent Heslop then curled an unstoppable Beckham-esque free kick round the wall into the top corner, to send Garnett into half time with a deserved win.

After the break Rutherford applied pressure and with the wind behind they had their tails up. However, Garnett looked strong in defence.

Rutherford did score through a deflected free kick to leave Harty no chance. The game then petered out, but not before Harty saved superbly from a fierce drive from the Rutherford #9.

The game ended 1-1 and Garnett won the group and will play Philosophers in the quarter final of the Calvert cup.
