GARNETT BOHEMIAN 1ST TEAM REPORT
Sat 22nd February 2003 Garnett Bohemians 6 (4) vs. (0) 0 Gateshead Three Tuns

The Green and Black had an easy victory against a struggling 3 Tuns outfit. Despite the non-stop battling of the plucky visitors there was only going to ever be one result - a convincing win for Garnett.

Garnett reverted back to 4-4-2 with Reserve team captain Adam Alexander slotting in at centre half for the unavailable Alex Martin and David Alexander dropping back into midfield for the ill Neil Hindley. With the Reserves out of action 400 games of pure Garnettness in the forms of Messrs. Hopkins and Pollard took their places on the bench. Garnett went out determined to play at a high tempo but struggled to get their passing going, once they did so they began ripping the visitors defence to pieces. Rich Watson was particularly productive down the right flank setting up the first three goals, simple finishes for Jason Thompson, Man of Match Dave Mercer and record scorer Dan Sherwood. Thompson volleyed in an excellent fourth from Sherwood cross but should have at least doubled his tally but missed three excellent chances. With the powerful running of Mercer and Alexander dominating midfield, the 3 Tuns rarely threatened. On the one occasion they did, keeper James Poole bravely came off his line to make a resounding block.

At half time the message was clear, keep it simple and a goal bonanza would result. Unfortunately due to continued determined resistance, over elaboration in approach play, wasteful finishing and poor fortune only goals from Dan Corcoran and Alexander in the last minute resulted. Mercer continued to take the eye with a typical all action performance while Craig Rowson was his normal excellent self at left back. Poole was called to make one brilliant save after a long range effort deflected off Shaun Cavanagh's head and also had to alertly fist over a spectacular long range effort but with Adam Alexander having a solid debut alongside Cavanagh these were the only times he was stretched.

Legend Pollard and 200+ caps man Hopkins made immediate impressions as they linked up front, with Hopkins causing the tiring visiting defence all sorts of problems with his pace. He created several chances for the eager Pollard who was clearly enjoying a rare moment in the 1st team. The unfortunate Pollard had two goals disallowed, headed against the post and missed an open goal in his brief cameo.

All in all, this was a satisfactory result and performance. This win was the sixth in arrow and keeps up the pressure on the teams above. Many thanks to Dave Mercer for marking the pitch.
