GOSFORTH BOHEMIAN GARNETT REPORT
Sat 21th February 2004 Gosforth Bohemians Garnett 3 (0) Ashington Colliers 1 (0)

If Garnett 1sts do manage to get promoted this season this may be the match they will reflect that their luck finally changed. After lamenting their misfortune in some other games earlier in the season when decisions, injuries and inspirational goalkeeping meant important points were dropped, three points were gained when probably a draw was a fair reflection of the 90 minutes of play.

Garnett edged the first half on possession but never really created many clear cut chances. The best opportunity was possibly the chance the Cave created for himself when he beat three players on the right but failed to connect properly with the shot.

The second half began more positively for the home side and a few half chances were created, though the keeper was never fully tested. The break through finally came from Sherwood midway through the second half but thereafter there appeared to be an attitude that the job was done.

The away side then began to win the majority of the loose balls and were piling pressure on the Garnett back four. They finally got their just deserts from a goalkeeping error by Fraser when he, unchallenged, dropped a cross into the net. This fortuitous goal sparked a further sustained period of Ashington pressure that Garnett were lucky to survive unscathed. Fraser twice made excellent saves to more than atone for his earlier mistake, one of which lead to a goalmouth scramble when he somehow palmed a ferocious close range shot onto the bar.

With a draw looking inevitable substitute Thompson came off the bench to score two vital late goals and to keep the dream of promotion alive.
