GARNETT QUARTER-FINAL MATCH REPORT
Sat 14th February 2004 Morpeth A 4 (3) Gosforth Bohemians Garnett 5 (1)

Garnett contested the quarter final of the Minor Cup against a strong Morpeth Town side, which had seen the previous two meetings end in stalemate. Before the match Hindley was given the role of vice captain while Mark 'Bruno' Brown was serving his five match suspension, with the message from manager Alan Wilkinson to get back to his agro best, a message he took to heart.

Garnett started the first half brightly with the whole team winning tackles all over the park. This was never more so than in the centre of the park when, with only ten minutes gone, Hindley made a tremendous tackle to rob a Morpeth player of the ball and then played John Hall through. Hall amazingly, given the ability of the opposition's linesman to flag offside, broke the offside trap and calmly slotted the ball home.

Unfortunately this early pressure didn't continue and like many games where Garnett have taken the lead they eased off the pedal. Morpeth gradually got themselves back into the game and equalised when a long ball wasn't dealt with properly, Hepburn made one good save to deny the first strike but could do little to prevent the incoming midfielder having a easy tap-in.

This spurred on Morpeth and not long after they scored a second, when their left winger cut inside two Garnett players and curled the ball into the top right hand corner. The third Morpeth goal came shortly before half time when Alexander brought down the Morpeth striker in the box, however unlike the previous one, this penalty was harshly rewarded. Needless to say the result was the same.

In the second half Garnett came out a better team, gone was the majority of the needless petty arguments and Garnett concentrated on playing football. Mid way through Garnett got their reward when a corner from Thompson, on for Corcoran, found Hall who scored a fine header.

The remainder of the half was a hard fought contest with chances few and far between. Not until injury time did Garnett finally equalise. From a dubiously awarded throw-in from Garnett's own geordie (well done Corcoran lad) linesman Hall delivered a superb cross from which Thompson headed home.

Morpeth Town heads dropped and as the teams went into extra time it was clear there was to be only one winner. With ten minutes gone in the first half of extra time the ball was played into the box, Hall challenged with the keeper who failed to hold the ball and allowed Sherwood to gleefully smash the ball back into the net.

From then on match became tight and edgy with little in the way of goal mouth opportunities. Garnett's final goal however, was a touch fortuitous. King picked the ball up wide out on the right a played the ball in to the box which everyone, including the Morpeth keeper, thought was going over the bar when instead it dropped under the crossbar and harmlessly floated in. This turned out to be the decisive goal as with only a few seconds left Morpeth pulled one back with a fine free kick struck from the edge box after the Morpeth striker was fouled. Before this Sherwood could have added a 6th when King swung in an excellent cross to the back post, however, with the goal beckoning the unmarked Sherwood could only head the ball wide. Thankfully it didn't matter and Garnett went through to the semi-finals
