GARNETT B TEAM REPORT
Saturday 8th October 2005 Garnett B 3 (1) vs.(0) 1 Chemfica B

Garnett welcomed back old stalwarts Cook and Church for this encounter and were more than glad of their contributions as it was their turn to be a man short. A mix up with the starting time also meant captain Dawnay only arrived just on kick off time. This was hardly the best preparation for a potentially difficult clash.

The game plan was to keep a solid back four, with Ford and Dawnay covering in front. It was important to maintain attacking options so Envy and Walworth were to support Marshall whenever possible. Perhaps Chem Fica expected Garnett to roll over, but this was not the case. Defenders stayed on their feet and were always strong in the air. Shaw had very little to do in a first half that saw any danger snuffed out at source. Cook and Church both made forays forward and when Ford found Walworth on the left, he won a challenge and was able to bear down on goal, scoring calmly for his third goal in as many games. The only dangerous attack Garnett looked vulnerable on was when Jones was sold short by a pass on the edge of the Chem Fica area (obviously forgetting which position he was playing this week) and the opposition broke quickly. Even this was repelled though without a shot on goal. Garnett went into their half time break a goal up and with Church’s oranges!

It was always going to be harder second half. With Chem Fica pushing extra players forward, Jones and Brooke were often outnumbered at the heart of the defence. Cook and Church both covered admirably though, and once a new shape had been agreed, with Ford and Dawnay not pushing so far forward, control was regained. A cross from Walworth was turned into his own net by the Chem Fica keeper – Shaw was sure it was going in and from his angle ‘who could argue?’ By now Garnett had the game completely in their control and Envy completed their scoring when he cut in from the right to hit a shot inside the near post. It was a well earned first goal for a player who had caused problems all game for the Chem Fica defence. Dawnay and Ford were now showboating with nutmegs and drag backs and Jones (not learning from his mistake in the first half) had a shot saved by the keeper after playing a one-two on the edge of the box with Ford. The ‘dirty’ Ford upended an attacker late on and the referee awarded a penalty. This just allowed Shaw to get in on the act with a save to his right. Eventually there was to be a deflected consolation goal, but this must be one of the most comfortable 10 men victories you could ever see. Everyone played their part, but with two goals and sterling defending when required, Walworth was awarded mom and he also became top scorer.

Moment to remember: The yelps from the same Chem Fica player after both Ford and Dawnay showboat at his expense.

Starting the game with 10 men meant this was always going to be tough but right from the off Garnett brought the game to Chemfica. Churchy, making a trademark run from the back, broke into the Chemfica box 10 minutes in but his shot was well parried. Lee Marshall was making excellent running up front to close down the Chemfica back line and with Giles battling well in midfield they had very little of the ball. It wasn't long before Garnett took the lead with Walworth scoring for the third time in as many games breaking down the left and finishing well. Ed Shaw did well to save from close range to keep Garnett in it.

The second half saw the whole team continue their excellent effort. Walworth scored his second of the game after his cross/shot was only deflected onto the post by the Chemfica keeper. Envy made sure later on to put us 3-0 up and this game beyond Chemfica.

Tired legs in the last 5 minutes allowed Chemfica to pull one back but this was a superb performance by a team who never looked like they had a man down.
